Well, we have released Maemo Periodic’s new version for the Internet Tablets. This version can be used in 770 and in the N800. Thanks to Maemo Team for making possible that it serves for the N800 too ![]()
The new version brings enough improvements of which I am going enumerate few:
- Colors, you can choose colors for the periodic table at different forms: for groups, for chemical series or for physical state of the element. Since the physical state depends on temperature, there is an option in the menu where it is possible to change.
- Mass calculator, you can obtain the molecular weight of compounds that you want.
- WebQuery, you can obtain the characteristics of many compounds doing a search in NIST webpage.
- WebConnect, they are links to several chemical webs that we consider to be important. Give us some idea of those that you would add.
- Graphics, we have added an option to be able to do graphs of several properties of the elements.
You can see some Maemo Periodic’s screenshots in my flickr account: MP screenshots
We know that the chemistry is more boring that to see videos with Mplayer or that listen the FM radio, but you can try Maemo Periodic and tell us if you like it and that you would improve. This way you can recover the chemistry classes that you skipped in high schooll
You can install Maemo Periodic following someone of the links:

Nokia N800: bora

Nice app.
A few comments:
1) Better titles on each window so that you can easily determine which one you want to pick when multiple windows are grouped together on the toolbar. Right now I have the main window, the graphics window and an elements details window open and the options when I tap the toolbar icon are : MaemoPeriodic - Mercury, MaemoPeriodic -, MaemoPeriodic. So the first on is good but the other two are ambiguous.
2) Termal conductivity should be Thermal Conductivity
3) The graphs disappear when you switch away from them and then back. That window is not being refreshed properly when the focus is back on it.
4) The text in the element details is alligned oddly. Because the last “origin” line is usually long and unwrapped, centering the text makes it aligned off to the right and sometimes you have to scroll to see the values of a short line. The value_label:value pairs should be aligned at the “:” and the long text should be wrapped to avoid the horizonal scroll bar.
thanks, this is very useful reference to have.
one improvement might be a back button on the new windows that popup.
also isotope data would be useful, but maybe that should be a whole new application.
Thanks. We will work in solved these bugs. Isotope data will come in future releases, I think that in next version.
Best Regards.
when I try to install the periodic app on my N800 from application manager I get an error :
unable to install maemo-periodic
application packages missing:
libglade 2-0 (>=a:2.3.6)
libgdbm3
any ideas?
Well, this is a problem with python installation. Before this didn’t happen.
Have you the maemo repository added?
It is:
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org
