Margarita Salas

Margarita Salas Falgueras, (November 30, 1938, born in Canero, Valdes, Asturias)

Licensed in Chemical Sciences for the Complutensian University of Madrid. She worked with the Nobel Prize Severo Ochoa in United States. Is employed at the field of the biochemistry specially at molecular biology.
She is pioneering in the enzymology field and in the knowledge of the transmission mechanisms of the genetic information.

At present she investigates in “Severo Ochoa” Molecular Biology Center. She’s a member of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, Royal Academy of the Spanish language and president of Severo Ochoa Foundation.

This May 1, the Asturian investigator Margarita Salas has turned into the first Spanish woman who joins the National Academy of Sciences of USA.

Walther Nernst

Walther Hermann Nernst (June 25, 1864 – November 18, 1941) was a German chemist who is known for his theories behind the calculation of chemical affinity as embodied in the third law of thermodynamics, for which he won the 1920 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Nernst helped establish the modern field of physical chemistry and contributed to electrochemistry, thermodynamics, solid state chemistry and photochemistry. He is also known for developing the Nernst equation.

Johannes Van der Waals

He’s famous “for his work in the equation of state of gases and the liquids”, for which he obtain the Nobel prize of Physics in 1910.

Van der Waals was the first one in realizing the need to take in consideration the volume of the molecules and the intermolecular forces establishing the relation among pressure, volume and temperature of the gases and the liquids.

Antoine Lavoisier

Antoine-Laurent of Lavoisier (Paris, on August 26, 1743 - May 8, 1794).
French chemist, considered the creator of the modern chemistry for his studies on oxidation of the bodies, the phenomenon of the animal breathing, analysis of the air, conservation of the mass (with the terms of reference of a famous Law), calorimetry, etc.
